The DHL Global Trade Barometer provides deep insights into macroeconomic factors that are affecting trade. By analyzing the global supply chain of 7 key countries, trends within industry can be identified, which gives insight to sectors that are on the rise (or fall in some cases). It is an essential tool for businesses dealing in international trade.
Tim Scharwath, CEO of DHL Global Forwarding, Freight explains, “The DHL Trade Barometer is a unique tool to forecast the future development of trade. We use a lot of data, which we then run through artificial intelligence to come up with a clear understanding of how the trade will develop in the next three months.”
The DHL Global Trade Barometer is based on import and export data for a number of intermediate and early-cycle commodities that serve as the basis for further industrial production, for example, brand labels for clothes, bumpers for cars or touch screens for mobile devices. Sources for the index are aggregated market data from air and containerized ocean freight in seven countries, which account for more than 75% of world trade. Using artificial intelligence, this data is compressed into a single index value.
“An index value above 50 indicates a positive development; values below 50 point to a decline in world trade, and all seven countries [reported on] are growing.”
